I was given my first camera, a Brownie Hawkeye, for Christmas when I was eight years old. The first photo I took was of my cat Blackie, a photograph I still have. Through the years following the gift of that first camera, I continued to take photos and also to draw pictures. At Cal State Long Beach I majored in art, English and photojournalism. I then founded a graphic design studio and eventually became editor and art director of Surfing magazine. After nearly seven years at Surfing, I became editor and art director at RC Cars, Model Builder and Arts & Activities magazines. I was a screenwriter for TV's X-Files, creating an encyclopedia of the first four seasons as well as writing the massive script for X-Files: The Game, a seven-CD, award-winning project that became a worldwide hit.
Having never abandoned my love for design and photography, I continue to shoot surfing, music concerts and work as a staff photographer for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, photographing Indycar racing at a series of venues in the U.S.
After writing two nonfiction books, Snap Judgments and The Tarnished Rainbow, I am now at work on a book of fiction. I have a long and enduring interest in popular culture, literature and film that has informed my work in many ways. Virtually all of the work I have done in my career has been in fields for which I have an abiding passion. When your life is supported by doing what you love, you can ask for nothing more.
My art direction and photographic work has won awards and has been featured in numerous shows and publications, including the National Newspaper Photojournalism Awards; Orange County Art Director's Club for Publication Design and Art Direction; PRINT; Communication Arts; and the Art of Photography International Exhibition.
